Siargao: My New Favourite Destination

Siargao is one of the many islands of the Philippines and it is under the jurisdiction of the province of Surigao del Norte. Somewhat under the radar when it comes to tourism, but lately, it’s gaining more and more attention. It is renowned as the surfing capital of the country.

It has been on my local travel bucket list for a long time so when a group of my friends asked to finally visit it, yes was the only answer. I went with my long-time friends – Arlhie, Mcgyver, Alex, and Hannah.

Places we visited:

  • Sugba Lagoon
  • Naked Island
  • Guyam Island
  • Daku Island
  • Cloud 9 Surfing Area
  • Maasin River

Tour guide:

Our tour guide turned friend was Gab (@gabisatthebeach) of Laag Siargao Tour. He is an amazing tour guide that went far beyond our agreement just to make sure that we will enjoy our stay in the island. You can hit is IG or facebook page for inquiries.

Sugba Lagoon

Do you know that famous photo of a wooden diving board? That is in Sugba Lagoon, located in Caob Island, about 20-to-30-minute boat ride from the main city. Aside from jumping (or sometimes just taking a photo) on that diving board, you can also enjoy other water activities here like kayaking and bamboo rafting.

Naked Island

As its name suggests, this little sandbar doesn’t have any trees or shades. Just a perfect scenery around you, crystal clear water and powdery white sand everywhere you look. If you are planning to visit this island, probably do it early as it can get extremely hot and crowded, and don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen.

Guyam Island

One of the famous 3 islands, Guyam is a small island with wonderful views all around. There is a small store where you can buy a drink. Again, pristine water and white sand.

Daku Island

This is the biggest island and it’s where they normally serve lunch. There are shaded huts that you can rent and you can check out some food stands.

Cloud 9 Tower / Surfing Area

This place is well-known for surfing. Either you get an instructor to teach you or just watch surfers from the tower.

Maasin River

You can rent a boat to have a tour in this river covered with coconut trees on both sides. The famous rope swing on a bent tree is located here as well. If you don’t mind heights, definitely try that one.

The easiest way to go around the area is rent a scooter, specially if you’re going for a food trip. We also tried so many restaurants – the island has Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Mexican, Western, and Filipino restaurants scattered around, so you won’t run out of choices.

If you like going for a night out, Siargao offers wild parties! Good music, some with live bands, and cheap drinks. Try going to Rumbar! We definitely consumed too much alcohol than we have planned. Haha! The locally made rum was a bomb! Haha

All in all, Siargao is a whole different experience that is why I fell in-love with it. Definitely my favourite and can’t wait to visit again.
